Kelaniya (Kalyani in Sanskrit) where the temple is situated, was one of the cradles of civilization in ancient times. Its history can be traced back to the pre=historic age. All civilizations in the world arose in river valleys. It was so with Kelaniya too. In those Pre-historic time’s human settlements sprang up in this valley, and Kelaniya being central to the region, became the oldest capital of Sri Lanka.

The British Period - (1796-1948 A.D)

The British who assumed rule of the low country in 1796 and captured the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815, were more tolerant towards religion unlike their predecessors, they did not interfere with the worship of the people. Neither did they support or promote it. So Kelaniya temple once again fell into a state of neglect and disrepair.
